LOGAN CANYON CURVE
LOGAN CANYON CURVE
START DATE: 10/20/2003
END DATE: 11/3/2003
PROJECT TYPE: In House
FUNDED BY: Internal UDOT Funding
COLLABORATORS: None
PROBLEM STATEMENT: To deal with concerns of public for straightening a curve in an area of dense old growth forest.
OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE: Show the effect that a new road alignment would have on old growth trees and illustrate benefit of taking out a sharp dangerous curve. (road straightening, aesthetics, number of trees destroyed)
METHODOLOGY / APPROACH: We used ARCGIS 8.3 and Multigen-Paradigm Sitebuilder to do this visualization. The computer used was a 2.4 ghz Intel P4 with 1 gig of RAM and a 128 mb Nvidia graphics card.
OUTCOME: UDOT has recently created a 3D visualization of a proposed alignment near the summit of Logan Canyon on SR-89 close to Bear Lake. The visualization aided UDOT in public meetings held in early November concerning the project. The visualization clearly shows the number and location of trees that would be removed during the re-alignment project. 3D modeling of the exact location and number of affected trees provides accurate information to designers and the public as to the concerns and development of the best 'context sensitive' solution for this alignment problem.
MEASURED BENEFITS: Public was able to see quite precisely how project and environment would look when completed. The visualization was presented at a public open house for the project.
FURTHER STUDY: None. Mission Accomplished.
