VIS AT THE HOUSEHOLD TRAVEL SURVEY DATA WORKSHOP

A workshop will be held at the Keck Center - home of TRB on June 6 - 7, 2011 titled: “Using National Household Travel Survey Data for Transportation Decision Making”. Session 5C (Innovative Methods for NHTS Data Display and Communication) will feature presentations on innovative techniques in displaying these data and providing more insights not readily obvious using traditional methods. The session will be moderated by Mr. Alan Pisarski, a recognized expert on transportation data, and author of the lead article in our 2007 TR-NEWS Visualization Theme Issue.

VIS AT THE PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT CONFERENCE

The Visualization Committee will conduct two sessions at TRB’s 4th International Transportation Systems Performance Measurement Conference in Irvine, CA. (May 18 - 20, 2011). The first will be led by Mr. Bob Winick of Motion Maps, LLC, and the second by Mr. Michael L. Pack of the CATT Laboratory at the University of Maryland.

• BREAKOUT 3B: Transforming Experiences—From Data to Measures, Measures to Information, and Information to Decisions Using Data Fusion and Visualization. One of the most pressing and important issues in performance measurement today is the need for data fusion as private and public sector data sources begin to merge. Data integration from various sources is one of the biggest challenges facing practitioners, as is the quality control, processing, analytic methods, and visualization of these merged data sets to allow better analysis, use, and dissemination of system performance information.

• BREAKOUT 3C: Asking the Right Questions—Timely Advice for Emerging Tools, Better Data, and Approaches for Systems Performance Measures. What are the questions transportation practitioners should be asking researchers and innovators about metrics, analysis methods, and data development? What are the emerging issues? What should practitioners look at? Innovation and solving problems is a daily exercise for most transportation researchers. If we go outside the day-to-day operations of transportation systems and even the industry, there is exciting new research that can help inform our needs for better ways of collecting and analyzing system performance. This session aims to stimulate ideas and conversation and generate a thought-provoking interactive discussion between experts and participants.
