ABOUT US

HISTORY:

The Committee was formally recognized in the summer of 2006 and is part of the Data and Information Systems Section which itself is part of the Policy and Organization Group within TRB. Visualization’s presence at TRB began building momentum in the early 1990’s which prompted the formation of a small subcommittee to better discuss and formulate research on this growing subject area in transportation. In 2003, TRB initiated a Task Force to look further into the matter...concluding its findings in January, 2006.

Much of the interest during the mid-90’s evolved around creating 3D geometry, images, and animations to better communicate how proposed projects will “look”. Today, visualization and its related forms of simulation and modeling, have evolved considerably, advancing the boundaries of how we can plan, deliver, operate, and maintain these infrastructure...as well as the education and training of tomorrow’s professionals.

Accordingly, the Committee not only looks at the breadth of these ever-evolving technologies, but more importantly it considers the implications to those organizations, professionals, and stakeholders who are looking to make better decisions based on their use.

SCOPE:

The scope of the Committee is to foster and disseminate collaborative exchange and research that enhances the usable knowledge of visualization methods and technologies for their potential in addressing critical transportation issues of today, as well as promoting innovative approaches to society’s transportation needs of the future.
