UPDATED - 2008 MIDYEAR MEETING (July 23 - 24)

The Visualization Committee will meet at the Keck Center of the National Academies in Washington, D.C. on July 23 - 24, 2008. Though this event will focus heavily on the (interests and needs)* of the new subcommittees, non-committee members with an interest in visualization are welcome to participate. If interested, please email intentions to do so to michael.manore@gmail.com.

* (Interests and Needs) These relate directly to VISUALIZATION in the context of Public Involvement, Performance Measurement, Geometric Design, Construction, Aviation Security, Freight and Goods Movements, etc. Visualization Subcommittees are encouraging the active involvement of other TRB committees.

VIS COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES 2009 CALL FOR PAPERS

The Visualization in Transportation Committee announces its Call For Papers in preparation for the 2009 TRB Annual Meeting, and is doing so under three subject-area titles:

• Visualization Research and Advancements in Transportation - solely by Visualization Committee (ABJ95)
(topics include Education & Training, Transportation Data, Ethics and Legal Issues, and Return on Investment)

• Visualization in Support of Public Involvement - jointly with Public Involvement Committee (ADA60)

• Extracting Meaningful Knowledge from Transportation Systems Using Advanced Visualization, Haptic, and Auditory Interfaces - jointly with Geographic Information Science and Applications Committee (ABJ60)

VAMS RESEARCH GROUP PRESENTS AT "LIKES" CONFERENCE

On April 19, 2008, Dr. Hughes and Greg Ferrara of NCSU/ITRE’s Visual Analytics, Modeling and Simulation (VAMS) research group made a presentation to a workshop sponsored by the Learning in the Knowledge Society (LIKES), a consortium of universities (Santa Clara University, Virginia Tech, NC A&T, and Villanova University) funded by the National Science Foundation as part of NSF’s CPATH program area (‘Pathways to a Revitalized Undergraduate Computing Education Information’).

CPATH is sponsored by the NSF Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). The workshop, held at NC A&T State University in Greensboro, NC was the second in a series of four workshops scheduled by the program, the goal of which is to bring together computer science experts and those representing the diversity of applied disciplines that either teach and/or utilize core computer science concepts and methods.

ITRE was invited to present in the areas of visualization and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

VISUALIZATION WORKSHOP AT TRAVEL SURVEY CONFERENCE

The Visualization Committee will be participating in a Data Visualization Techniques Workshop at the 8th International Conference on Travel Survey Methods in Transport May 25 - 31, 2008 in Annecy, France.

The Travel Survey Methods Committee (ABJ40), together with the International Steering Committee for Travel Survey Conferences (ISCTSC) have initiated this workshop to explore current techniques and opportunities for using visualization in this community.

VIS AND PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT PROCEEDINGS POSTED

The Visualization, Performance Measurement, and Strategic Management Committees held a joint workshop on January 12, 2008 at the TRB Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. The objective of this workshop was to explore and discuss innovative visualization techniques for transportation system performance measurement results related to applications for:

• transportation planning,
• strategic management,
• regional transportation systems management and operations, and
• more traditional congestion management processes.

This was a unique opportunity to combine talents from the sponsoring committees for the purposes of:

• sharing knowledge,
• encouraging development of new ideas for reporting and communicating data and information about transportation system performance, and
• identifying needs for new research.
